Surf Beach Closure Update

SURF BEACH CLOSURE UPDATE  #1

In May the Coastal Commission had the five-year continuation of the summer closure of Surf Beach on the Consent portion of their agenda at their meeting in Oxnard. At that meeting, the City of Lompoc presented an objection letter and one Lompoc resident was there to speak in opposition.

With those objections, Larry Simon the Coastal Commission Staff member handling the item asked the Air Force to continue the item to the July meeting in San Luis Obispo and the Air Force agreed so it could be a hearing item on the agenda.

At that time the surfbeachlompoc.com web site was created and a number of people stepped up to circulate petitions which were due back by June 10th for the July meeting.

As more information was provided to the Coastal Commission Staff, it became clear to them that there was a lot more analysis that needed to be done. That information was carried up to Coastal Commission Senior Staff and the decision was made to delay the item longer to complete additional analysis. Because the Staff wanted to have the item heard at a Commission meeting near Lompoc, so more people could attend, the next available date was December in Oxnard.

To show the Coastal Commissioners and Commission Staff that we are serious about our Surf Beach we have extended the period for circulating the petitions to July 5th. All of those signatures will be presented by a group from Lompoc at the July meeting in San Luis Obispo. It is a three-day meeting on July 10,11,12. On about June 20th we will know which day we will attend and speak and that will be on the web site. Please join us. More updates will be on the web site as time passes.

Many thanks to Larry Simon of the Coastal Commission for moving the Surf Beach closure item forward. The Coastal Commission will be working with not only Vandenberg Air Force Base but the United States Fish and Wildlife Service who has jurisdiction on the Air Force Base.

The Commission Staff has asked for letters and emails.
